Red Bull Flugtag in Hyde Park, London

Great time at the Red Bull Flugtag yesterday in Hyde Park. The weather held out and we had a good crew of people hanging out.

Had my telephoto lens so the photos of the ramp is as good as I could get from our vantage point and there was no standing up-- the English crowd used their boorish football heckling skills to pressure anyone standing up in front of the rest of us (who were sitting down) to promptly sit down.

Took lots of photos, despite Ellis' distasteful shots, which I didn't include here. let me know if you want to see those, they're censored for now.

Why I Love New York City

1. MMAs in McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn: where else could an awards show like that go down?


2. Art gallery and performance art open house in Brooklyn loft- $10 cover for open bar (which meant cheap beer), techno music thumping , guy juggling flaming torches, women doing vertical ballet via hanging columns of cloth, an art gallery with nice artwork that most didn't pay any attention too (we particularly liked the masking-tape boat), a huge snake for people to wrap themselves up in, and tons of hipsters everywhere trying so hard


3. Walking through Chinatown to catch the bus back to DC and seeing a woman holding her infant over the gutter of the street for a makeshift bathroom


4. Seeing (what I'm told) is the always huge line at Shake Shack in Union Square Park


5. MoMa (too brief walkthrough, need another two or three hours there): the Picasso room; the new photography 2007 exhibit- Tanyth Berkeley (exquisite, soul-piercing portraits) and Berni Searle (bright, abstract designs); a series of stark, unadorned black and white photographs of early Colorado Springs (circa 1950s)

Human Powered Super Computer

I saw an ad for the Wired NextFest in LA a few issues ago and joked with my buddy who lives in LA that I wanted to go, to see all of the cool techie/geek gadgets and technologies but also so that we could hand out. Then he surprised me by saying that not only had he heard about it and was attending the event, he was going to be in it.

John's on the UCLA Cycling Team and they were chosen (not sure how) to power a supercomputer. Pretty cool, 10 of them on their bikes in full cycling uniform powering a supercomputer. Hadn't seen any photos yet but he just let me know about this video. Now I wish I'd flown out there, this would have been amazing to see in person.

I think you see John for an instant, with a white cycling cap on.

Camping on Brokeback Mountain

If there's two parts of me that are most often misunderstood, it's my taste in music and my sense of humor.

Anyone who went to college with me, suffering through hot car trips to the mountains every weekend for snowboarding, can attest to my eclectic tastes. But I defended those mix tapes every time, dismissing others negativity as simple lack of appreciation for good music (pretentious perhaps). I'll defend my music (see my Last.fm profile or my Anywhere.fm library) to my grave.

But I've talked about music a lot this week already.

My brother (pictured at the right) called me last night to tell me that he wore my homemade Brokeback Mountain t-shirt (given as a birthday present) to school yesterday and got lots of compliments. I made that shirt on a complete lark and didn't think he even wore out in public anymore after the one time he wore it here on the night of his birthday party.

I thought (and still do think) it's funny. If you agree, let me know and I'll make you one.

Tyler Driving

Came across this photo via my Google Sidebar, which is docked at the right-side of my screen and rotates through all of photos. It's a great little tool, giving me a reminder of all the cool trips and poeple I've met in my life.

Here's one of Tyler driving the Land Rover down to the beach at Cape Cod last year. Up close and personal, which I know he didn't appreciate, but I like the photo, the determined face (or perhaps the scrunched eyes are because of the sun and no sunglasses) contrasted with the blankness of outside (my bad photography skills not adjusting for the white balance of the sand and clouds backlighting Tyler's face).

Sometimes accidents become good photos but more often than not they remain accidents that you never show anyone. I think this one belongs more in the serendipity category.

Cousin Will Beatboxing

I posted on Kid Beyond's beatboxing, after seeing him perform at the Imogean Heap show, for two distinct reasons: he's amazing and my cousin Will is into beatboxing and I knew that he'd appreciate Kid Beyond's skill.

Below is my cousin Will doing his own beatboxing thing. It's a few years old and therefore not his best work but inspiring nonetheless.
